Seema Krishnakumar has more than a decade – long experience as a visual communicator, documentary photographer, and design faculty. She has worked for various Governmental and non–governmental organisations as a designer in the early part of her career. She worked with DJ Academy of Design, Kerala State Institute of Design, and National Institute of Design as an academic. She was instrumental in setting up Kerala State Institute of Design, and served as it as first Executive Director.

Her design interests are with visual storytelling using data visualisation, information design, interaction design, interactive narratives, multimedia and documentary photography. Her subject interests are in the intersection of socio – political – cultural – environmental – climate domains.

Currently she is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Design, IIT Hyderabad and a PhD scholar at IDC, IIT Bombay. She holds a Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Cochin University and Masters in Communication Design from Pratt Institute, New York. She was a recipient of Fulbright – Nehru Master’s Fellowship for Leadership Development, for 2009 – 2011.

In the Department of Design, she leads the Data Collaboration lab (Data Co-lab) and co-partners the Contemporary Visual Culture lab (CVC lab).
